The objectives of the Centre are to educate the public and act as a watchdog to raise ethical standards in the media in order to improve democratic governance and social cohesion in Kerala and to enable marginalized groups to access and utilize the media, including the new social media, in an ethical and equitable manner.
The Centre has hosted a number of talks by leading journalists. In the future, it will undertake will undertake the following main activities:
- Document and disseminate the history of journalism and media in Kerala, focusing in particular on the issues raised by Swadeshabhimani on the economic, social and cultural spheres for the progress of different communities; their struggle for democratic rights for all people; the fight against corruption in public service and accountability of public servants .
- Undertake regular monitoring and analysis of the coverage by the media of key contemporary issues related to the core areas of VMFT (education, science and technology for sustainable development, and governance and equitable development) and their role in shaping public attitudes and perceptions.
- Organize short training programs, lectures and provide technical advice/ support for starting journalists, students, teachers and marginalized groups on written and oral communication (for presentations, speeches etc), writing for the web and wiki platforms and use of new social media.
