Who Shapes Progressive Thought Today: Institutions or Algorithms?

We hosted the third session of our discussions series as part of the Shri. K.M. Bashir’s centenary celebrations, bringing together diverse perspectives on the evolving role of social media in shaping public discourse in Kerala. Titled “Social Media and Progressive Thought in Kerala – Talk 3,” the session was held on March 26, 2026, at the K.M. Bashir Memorial Building in Thiruvananthapuram.

The discussion featured noted speakers G. Biju Mohan, a social media activist, and Fathima Nizaruddin, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Passau, Germany. The session explored how digital platforms, particularly Malayalam-language spaces on YouTube, influence the creation, dissemination, and reception of progressive ideas in contemporary society.

The speakers examined the growing significance of regional language content in democratizing access to information and enabling more inclusive participation in public debates. They highlighted how Malayalam social media ecosystems have evolved beyond entertainment to become important spaces for political dialogue, critical thinking, and social awareness. At the same time, the discussion acknowledged the complexities of these platforms, including questions around credibility, echo chambers, and the challenges of sustaining nuanced discourse in fast-paced digital environments.

A key theme that emerged was the role of content creators and digital communities in shaping narratives that challenge traditional hierarchies and amplify underrepresented voices. The speakers noted that while platforms like YouTube have lowered barriers to entry, the responsibility of fostering informed and constructive conversations remains crucial. The interplay between accessibility and accountability, they suggested, will define the future trajectory of progressive thought in digital spaces.

The session concluded with reflections on how institutions, educators, and civil society can engage more meaningfully with these emerging platforms to strengthen democratic dialogue. The vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. Jameela Begum, President VMFT, marking the close of a thought-provoking discussion that underscored the transformative potential of social media in Kerala’s intellectual and cultural landscape.
